Tom Waits, Songwriter / Actor / Singer * Born: 7 December 1949 * Birthplace: Pomona, California * Best Known As: Eccentric, raspy-voiced singer and actor Tom Waits released his first album, Closing Time in 1973, a set of bluesy ballads about love gone sour, and launched a persona as a whiskey-soaked denizen of smoky places in the wee hours. Since then he has released albums that have earned him a cult following, if not a commercial hit. He has appeared in several films, working with Francis Ford Coppola in The Outsiders, Rumblefish (both 1983) and Bram Stoker"s Dracula (1992). In 1983 Waits was nominated for an Oscar for his soundtrack to One From the Heart, and critical praise for his three albums Swordfishtrombones (1983), Rain Dogs (1985) and Frank"s Wild Years (1987) firmly established him in show business. During the 1990s he acted in films, released albums and performed on stage, carving out his own little niche of avant garde music and urban drama of the beatnik-noir variety. In 1999 he co-starred with Hank Azaria and Janeane Garofalo in Mystery Men. Biography Tom Waits Tom Waits was born in 1949 in Pomona, California. One of rock’s most enduring and individual performers, Tom Waits’ uncompromising style has garnered a loyal and diverse fan base during his career which now spans over three decades. The instantly recognisable ‘gravel tones’ of his voice and the melancholic soaked lyrics of his lowlife lifestyle compositions have curiously given him an enduring appeal. Inspired by beatnik poetry and the writings of Charles Bukowski, the early years saw Waits produce a number of jazzy/bluesy orchestrated albums which quickly attracted critical acclaim. Closing Time (1973) and The Heart of Saturday Night (1974) are fine examples of this. As the Seventies drew to a close, Waits’ career took on another dimension as he moved into the world of cinema, both as a composer and actor.
